The Agriculture Census provides comprehensive statistical information on Liberia’s agricultural sector, including agricultural holdings, crops, livestock, fisheries, farm characteristics, land use, and the socio-economic conditions of agricultural households. The census is an important source of information for understanding the structure and performance of Liberia’s agricultural sector and for supporting evidence-based planning, policy formulation, investment, food-security planning, and monitoring of national development priorities.

Everything you need to know about the Liberia Agriculture Census
The Liberia agriculture census is a large-scale statistical exercise conducted to collect information on the structure of Liberia’s agricultural sector. It covers matters such as agricultural households and holdings, land use, crops, livestock, labour, irrigation, machinery and access to agricultural services.
The Liberia Agriculture Census provides reliable data for agricultural policies, food-security planning, investment decisions, research and programme monitoring. It also helps the Liberian government and development partners identify the needs of farmers and allocate resources more effectively.
The Liberia Agriculture Census is conducted by the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) in close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and all Ministries, Agencies and Commissions (MACs) responsible for agriculture. LISGIS also work with private sector actors and development partners in the conduct of the Agriculture Census.
The census covers agricultural holdings operated by households as well as farms operated by non-households, including companies, concessions, institutions, cooperatives, farmer-based organizations, private farmers and other non-household entities.
An agricultural holding is an economic unit of agricultural production under single management. It may consist of one or more parcels of land and may conduct crop production, livestock rearing or other agricultural activities.
The agricultural holder is the person, group of persons or legal entity responsible for making major decisions concerning the operation of an agricultural holding.
7. Is an agricultural holding the same as a household?
No. A household is a group of people who usually live and eat together, while an agricultural holding is a production unit. A household may operate one agricultural holding, several households may jointly operate a holding, or a company or institution may operate a holding.
No. Agricultural activities may be undertaken on owned, rented, borrowed, communal, customary or otherwise accessed land. Inclusion is based on operating an agricultural activity, not necessarily on land ownership.
The Liberia Agriculture Census collect information on several aspect of agriculture, including:
• Location and identification of agricultural holdings
• Household and holder characteristics
• Types of agricultural activities practiced
• Land tenure, land use and farm size
• Temporary and permanent crops cultivated
• Livestock and poultry
• Agricultural labour
• Irrigation and water management
• Machinery, equipment and farm inputs
• Forestry, fisheries or aquaculture activities
The LAC-2024 was a sample census based on the World Census of Agriculture (WCA) recommendation. Trained enumerators visited selected communities, households and establishments and recorded the census information using tablets and Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) applications.
