The Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) has launched a series of internal capacity-building trainings to strengthen staff skills, accountability, and operational efficiency across key areas of the institution. The first training session, focused on Financial Management and Procurement, was held on October 30, 2025, at LISGIS headquarters and brought together staff from various departments. Facilitated by experts from the Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West Africa (HISWA) Project Implementation Unit, the session focused on strengthening staff understanding of financial management and procurement procedures that support effective and accountable institutional operations. Key areas covered included budgeting, expenditure tracking, procurement planning, financial controls, fraud prevention, and risk management. Through discussions and practical exercises, participants examined how proper financial and procurement practices can improve project implementation and strengthen the management of institutional resources. In her opening remarks, Deputy Director General Hon. Mariah Q. Gilayeneh emphasized that staff development is an important component of LISGIS's broader efforts to strengthen institutional performance. “This training is not just a requirement; it is an investment in the integrity and sustainability of our operations.” Participants also highlighted the practical value of the training, particularly its relevance to their day-to-day responsibilities and the management of institutional resources. The financial management and procurement session is the first in a planned series of internal capacity-building activities covering areas such as information and communication technology (ICT) and monitoring and evaluation. The initiative underscores LISGIS's commitment to developing a skilled, accountable, and efficient workforce capable of supporting the institution's mandate to produce and disseminate reliable, timely, and transparent official statistics and geospatial information for evidence-based decision-making in Liberia.
The Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) and the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a Tourism Satellite Account Technical Working Group (TSA-TWG), marking an important step toward strengthening tourism statistics and measuring the sector’s contribution to Liberia’s economy. Signed on May 26, 2026, in Monrovia, the agreement provides a framework for LISGIS and LNTA to work together in producing reliable, internationally comparable statistics on Liberia’s tourism sector. The Tourism Satellite Account will help provide a clearer picture of tourism’s contribution to key areas of the economy, including gross domestic product (GDP), employment, investment, and government revenue. The initiative will also support evidence-based policies and investment decisions by giving policymakers and stakeholders a more comprehensive understanding of the sector. Speaking at the signing ceremony, LISGIS Director General Hon. Richard Fatorma Ngafuan welcomed the collaboration and commended the technical teams involved in advancing the initiative. He noted the importance of strengthening systems to track tourism activity and produce the statistical information needed to support the sector. LNTA Director General Princess Eva Cooper expressed appreciation for LISGIS's partnership, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in advancing Liberia's tourism agenda. LISGIS Deputy Director General Dogba K. Norris noted that the initiative provides a foundation for evidence-based tourism policy and planning. The TSA-TWG will support the production and coordination of tourism statistics in line with internationally recognized statistical standards, providing Liberia with stronger evidence for planning, monitoring, and evaluating tourism development.
Seven staff members of the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) have graduated with Master of Arts degrees in Demography from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania, following their participation in the institution’s staff scholarship and capacity-building program. The seven staff members began their studies in Tanzania on November 15, 2024, under a staff scholarship initiative supported through the Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West Africa (HISWA) initiative. They successfully completed their Master of Arts in Demography programs and graduated on May 25, 2026. The graduates are: 1. Princess P. Dabieh 2. Patrick M. Wreh 3. Telkie Carbisy 4. George Yarwoah 5. Sam Darwah 6. Sielay Dorleh 7. Roland Yengbeh The achievement represents an important investment in strengthening the technical capacity of Liberia's national statistical system. Training in demography equips statistical professionals with advanced skills in population analysis, demographic trends, migration, fertility, mortality, and population-based research, areas that are essential to planning and development. LISGIS leadership welcomed the graduates' achievement, noting that strengthening staff expertise is central to improving the quality and use of official statistics in Liberia. The newly qualified professionals are expected to apply their knowledge and skills to support data production, demographic analysis, evidence-based policymaking, and national development planning. The graduates' achievement also highlights the value of institutional investment in professional development and regional academic partnerships in building a stronger and more technically capable statistical workforce.
